Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the facial skin mainly affecting the central face and affects 45 million people worldwide. Although rosacea can affect anyone, it often starts between the age of 30-60 yrs. and is more common in women and those with lighter skin.
Rosacea comes in various forms and can fluctuate in severity. Rosacea is characterised by redness, flushing and visible blood vessels. This condition particularly affects the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead and may lead to the development of redness, small, pus-filled spots and thickened rough skin. In some cases, it can affect the eyes causing them to become irritated and watery, this is known as ocular rosacea.
The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and vascular factors. Triggers such as: sun exposure, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, warm conditions, wind and hot beverages are found to commonly exacerbate the condition. Rosacea is a long-term condition without a known cure however it can be adequately managed with robust treatments and lifestyle modifications.
