Pigmentation

Pigmentation refers to the natural colour of your skin and is regulated by the amount and distribution of melanin, which is a pigment produced by cells in the skin called melanocytes. Melanin has a protective role in the skin by creating a barrier against the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An overstimulation of the melanocytes can lead to an imbalance in melanin production which can lead to pigmentation issues.

Hyperpigmentation is because of an over production of melanin, resulting in dark sports, patches or areas on the skin. Hypopigmentation is caused by an under production or reduction of melanin produced by the body, resulting in lighter or white patches on the skin. The alteration in melanin production can be triggered by sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations, inflammation and certain medications. The impact of pigmentation will affect each person differently however the one commonality is that it can affect self & skin-confidence.

Pigmentation is a challenging diagnosis to manage however at Bedeque Medical Clinic we are committed to guiding you on your skin journey. All treatments at Bedeque Medical Clinic start with a consultation with Dr Siobhán. At this appointment we will take a 360° skin scan and discuss how skincare and in-clinic treatments can play a crucial role in managing pigmentation.
